Do Gooder provides an easy way for you to send action-orientated follow-up emails to your supporters right after an action is taken to capitalise on their focus and active engagement in that moment.

The emails are branded with your choice of colours and your logo. We send the emails on your behalf from our domain (good.do). If you would prefer to send emails from your own domain you can. However,  if you want to reliably deliver them to your supporters you will need to modify your DNS records, otherwise the major email providers are likely to classify these 'spoofed' emails as spam, as these techniques are regularly used by spammers. Furthermore, this practice may impact deliverability of other emails you send over time and possibly result in your domain being blacklisted until it is fixed.

Authenticate our domain to send for you

If you wish to send follow up emails that originate from your domain (e.g. [email protected]) rather than @good.do there are important steps to take to ensure that those emails are consistently delivered. In simple terms the email needs to be authenticated by the domains DNS server to confirm that it is being 'legally' sent from our domain (good.do) masquerading as your domain (@yourdomain.com).

Firstly, you simply modify the domain in the follow-up email ‘from address' field by changing the domain part from @good.do to @yourdomain.com and the email will be sent as if its coming from @yourdomain.com, when in-fact its coming from our email servers.

In order to set up your domain to correctly send email from your own custom domain you need to modify the DNS records for the domain to include an SPF record.

Background

SPF (Sender Policy Framework - domain based email authentication) is an email authentication method designed to detect forged sender addresses in emails (email spoofing). Email Authentication provide a way to mitigate the illegal use of domains and can be used to protect your domain from being blacklisted due to others sending unsolicited emails pretending to be you.

Modifyng DNS Records

In order to add these records to your DNS, you will need to log in to the DNS manager for the domain you wish to send the emails from (yourdomain.com). This is usually configured as part of your web hosting service so you may need to refer the documents on your hosting service or talk to your service administrator or web developer to get these changes made correctly.

Modifying DNS records is not a trivial task. Always be sure to check your specific documentation prior to making any changes to your domains DNS settings. For this reason we recommend asking someone familiar with DNS to set the records for you.

Creating or editing your SPF record

In order to correctly set up an SPF record you need to include at least the content below. There may be an existing SPF record on the domain already, in that case you'll either need to modify it to allow email to be sent from both your mailserver, good.do and sendgrid.net (since we send our emails through the email provider Send Grid, that  domain needs to be included as well). Note:  There can only be one SPF record for each version of SPF defined or supported.

Add a TXT record with the following content (which may need to be modified to include your domain)

v=spf1 mx include:good.do include:sendgrid.net -all

You can check that the SPF record has been applied by checking your domain with a tool like one of these:

Once this is set up you can send follow-up emails via Do Gooder as if they are being sent from your own servers.

DKIM signing of emails

As an additional method to improve deliverability you can also ‘sign' each email you send to authenticate that the email is in fact being sent by you. This requires some additional settings on our end and yours which we are able to provide support for on our Goodest Pro Plan.

Get in touch if you would like to add this to your follow up emails.
