How does Syncing work with NationBuilder?

Once your Campaign is synced to your Nation the following rules apply to the syncing of your Nation:

New people

  • Are added to your Nationbuilder (NB) Nation

  • The matching fields from the Do Gooder action are inserted in your Nation (usually First Name, Last Name, email address, Telephone, Physical address if provided, Zip Code.

  • By default we use the standard email opt-in/out flags and these will be set in Nationbuilder based on the choice made by the supporter on your Do Gooder forms.

  • Alternatively, you can also use tags for this which will not impact the new Person's default NB opt-in/out status but instead set up an alternative setting based on tags within NB. You will then need to manually manage how you communicate with that person and what the Do Gooder choice ‘means’ for this supporter and your organisation. For example you might create an email opt-in/out just for campaign/action related emails and leave the NB default subscription for all of organisation emails/newsletters etc. Effectively creating two lists for your supporters to be on/off.

  • NOTE that when you do this NB does not automatically honour this tag based ‘list', you will need to use tag filtering within NB to send/not send to this ‘list’. See your NB help/documentation for more on how to do that.

  • Also, if you request a phone number and it is given we assume the supporter is opting in for sms and telephone communication and set the opt-in/out for that channel accordingly.

These settings for the above can be found in the Advanced Tab of your Campaign and appear after you connect your Nation.

Existing people

  • Based on email address if the person exists only fields that are blank get updated (we err on the side of caution and do not allow people to modify their Nationbuilder details via Do Gooder in case this is not that person)

  • Any fields that are blank will be updated with information provided on the Do Gooder action.

  • Op-in/outs are overwritten so that a Do Gooder acton that uses the default subscription flags will opt-in/out an existing Person in your Nation. This person is considered to have opted out of all communications with your organisation when this happens. If you use tags instead, we will toggle these on or off (delete / add them) which allows your Do Gooder campaigns to not impact your global subscription settings (this should be communicated on the subscription labels however (i.e., Opt out of emails from our campaigns (as opposed to from the organisation, which is usually the default).

  • There is also a setting at the Account Level (click Account at the top of your dashboard to access) where this can be explicitly set, so that Do Gooder subscription fields in the CSV export show that the subscription was related to the campaign and not the organisation.

  • This setting does not impact the behaviour of the Nationbuilder syncing however it only impact our exported CSV data so you know what kind of subscription this person agreed to. You will need to manage this type of multi-campaign subscription manually at your end with multiple lists for each campaign.
